ケンブリッジ大学のクスカワさんのデビュー作です。僕の知る限り、日本人が書いた西洋の intellectual history に関する著作ではおそらく始めての「ワールド・クラッシック」の領域に入ってしまった傑作です。人文主義者にして、ルターの右腕、そしてヴィッテンブルグ大学の改革指導者であったフィリップ・メランヒトンの自然哲学に関しての研究です。特にその霊魂論と占星術的フィジカに関するテーマに重点が置かれています。「ルター派医学者におけるメランヒトンと占星術」という論文を通してクスカワさんの存在は知っていたのですが、あるシンポジウムで会ったオクラホマ大学のピーター・バーカー氏（16世紀コスモロジー専門）の強力な推薦からこの著作に出会いました。

その後、2000年８月のドイツ・Wolfenbuettel にある Herzog-August Bibliothek の国際サマー・スクール『ルネサンス後期の学術医学』で講師（テーマ）として招かれていたクスカワさんにお会いし、お話する機会を得ました。（その１）（その２）。
2000年12月の一時帰国時に、スピノザ協会事務局長の高木久夫さん（ICU）から、クスカワさんが1996年12月20日に ICU で行った講演をまとめた Human Reason in a Fallen
