隠れた名著 　　   　 その９ 　 リン・ソーンダイク著 「15世紀の錬金術」 from Lynn Thorndike, A History of Magic and Experimental Science. Vol. 4, Columbia U.P. , 1934. 　　　　　　　     隠れた名著（その８）の続きです。これも、こういう名の著作があるという意味ではありません。ソーンダイクの不朽の金字塔である『魔術と経験科学の歴史』（全８巻、1923‐1958年）の中、ここでは15世紀に関する巻の錬金術関係の章を抜き出してお伝えします。補遺の資料編を含めない本論だけで15世紀の錬金術に関して約90ページほど割かれています。特に注目は、ライモンドゥス・ルルスの錬金術文書の綿密かつ総合的な分析です。最近出された画期的な M.Pereira 氏のルルス錬金術文書に関する研究の下敷きは、既に1934年の時点で出されていたのです。そう言った意味でも、M.Berthelot 以降 R.Halleux 以前の中世ラテン錬金術の研究の一番の貢献者である Lynn Thorndike の素晴らしい作品は不滅なのです。
