「世界霊魂へ：リプシウスと霊魂の飛翔」

“To the World-Soul: Justus Lipsius on the Soul’s Flight”

While editing the complete writings of Seneca, the Flemish humanist Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) composed his main works Manuductio and Physiologia Stoicorum (Antwerp, 1604) as useful guides for a better understanding of the teachings of the Roman moralist. In these treatises he tried to harmonize the Stoic doctrines with Christianity by spiritualizing their materialistic elements. He developed in particular his theory of the World-Soul on the basis of the belief which is called “cosmic theology” by scholars. Originating from a syncretism between Platonism and Stoicism, this current diffused among the Roman intellectuals of the pre-Christian period. Lipsius also made his interpretation acceptable by calling upon the idea, popular in his time, of the “ancient theology” (prisca theologia). Building upon his interpretation of Stoicism, colored with Renaissance Platonism, he identified the World-Soul, or more precisely, the “mind” (mens) of the world, with God. From this standpoint, he defended the immortality of the human soul in agreement with the Christian faith. For him, at the death of the body, the human soul ascends towards its source, the World-Soul. The present paper aims to examine and contextualize Lipsius’s theory of the soul’s flight as return to the World-Soul.

秋以降の予定ですが、以下のようになっています。このなかでパドヴァの会議はまだ流動的なので、それが11月以降にずれてくれると非常に助かります。トレドの会議は雑誌 Azogue の設立10周年を記念したパーティを兼ねた非公式なものなので、これまでに使ったアイテムを申し訳ないですが流用しようと思います。そうすると、新作を作るのは20分と短いキプロス会議の原稿と、10月のヴェルサイユでの会議です。こちらは来年度の前期のハイライトとなるものなので、今夏から準備を始めるというかたちで気合を入れて望みたいと思います。ちなみにキプロスとは、写真のようなところです。はやり断らなくて良かったですね、はい。

途中で気合が抜けたので、気分転換のためにキプロスでの国際会議のための発表用のアブストラクトを書いてみました。これまで書いたものを流用できたので、これはものの数十分で出来上がりました。＞ エヴェリンに送り出してしまいました。リアクションを待ちます。締め切りは5月15日なので、まだまだ時間があります。しかし、今夏はこれで大小３本の発表原稿を書かなくてはいけなくなりました。キプロスの魅力に惹かれたとはいえ、ちょっと無謀な試みだったかもしれません。

　 エヴェリンの企画している国際会議「霊魂の天昇」 “The Ascent of the Soul” は、キプロスで9月25-26日に行われる予定です。発表時間は20分＋質疑10分という感じです。この秋の僕のスケジュールとしては、ヴェルサイユでの国際会議「太陽」が10月15-17日、詳細は未定ですがパドヴァでの国際会議「アルピーノ」が9月か10月ということで、既に2つ大きなものが入っているので、夏は準備のためにきびしくなることを覚悟しています。ということで、このキプロスの件を受けるかどうか微妙ですが、非常に惹かれています。リプシウスのテクストで霊魂の世界霊魂への回帰を論じた部分があるかどうか？と考えています。例えば、｢リプシウスと世界霊魂への回帰としての霊魂の天昇｣ “Justus Lipsius on the Soul’s Flight as Return to the World-Soul” といったことが可能かどうかです。かなりセクシーなタイトルだと思いません？あるいは、「世界霊魂へ：リプシウスと霊魂の飛翔」 “To the World-Soul: Justus Lipsius on the Soul’s Flight” というのでは、ヴァージニア・ウルフの小説の題名のパロディすぎるでしょうか？

2009. 3. 20 金

　 さあ、今日が発表のある日です。7時半に目が覚めました。セッションは10時半からですが、僕の順番は11時ごろです。今日は平行して4つのフィチーノについてのセッションがあります。最初のセッションでのフィチーノの物質理論に関する論文を聞いて質問 （我ながら相手の盲点をつく鋭いものだったと思います）をしてから、自分のセッションの場所に行きました。会場に集まった人々の雰囲気もよく、僕の発表も好評のうちに終わりました。なかなか良いセッションだったと思います。セッション終了後、関係者とランチを食べてから午後のフィチーノについての第3と第４セッションを聞きにいきました。第3 セッションではクリストフが発表しました。なかなか堂に入っていて、会場の反応も良かったと思います。第4セッション ではモードがピサのフィチーノ主義者ヴェルディのデーモン論について発表しました。その後すぐに、会場ホテルに用意されたバスに分乗してロス郊外にあるゲッティ美術館での David Freedberg の記念講演を聴きに行きました。例の本『山猫の眼』の著者ですが、美術史の人なのですね。途中でウトウトしてしまいました。その後のレセプションではクリストフに紹介されて仲良くなったエヴェリンと過ごしました。22時ごろでしょうか、帰りのバスが出るためにゲッティを追い出され、ホテルに帰ってきてからロビーのカフェでカクテルを飲みながら、さらにいろいろな話をしました。なかなか実りの多かった一日だと思います。

　 すこし時差ボケのせいか、最初に目が覚めたのは東海岸時間で9時 （こちらの5時）で、もう一度無理やりに眠った後に、西海岸時間で9時から身支度をして10時半のセッションを聞きに行きました。モーティが主催するカルテックの人たちによるセッションだったのですが、聞きに来ているのは彼らを含め5人しか居ませんでした。

　 お昼にクリストフと待ち合わせに行くとエヴェリンという名のフィチーノ関係者が一人いて、そのあとにモードが合流しました。久しぶりに会いました。
