「『Early Science and Medicine』誌は、古代から17世紀末までの科学・医学・技術の歴史を対象とした国際季刊雑誌である。18世紀以前の科学的思想と活動の全ての側面を一個の雑誌で取り扱う事への必要性は、中世から初期近代を通しての時期における古代の典拠の不断の重要性と科学の職業性の確立以前の時期を特徴付ける比較的低いレヴェルの専門化と高いレヴェルの分野相互依存性という二つの要因に拠っている。西欧、ビザンティン、アラブ伝統の研究に限定されるこの雑誌は、特にそれらの連続性と相互関係性の要素を強調し、かつテクスト註解と歴史上の人物や科学的な問題点と実践に関するモノグラフィ的研究を含む様々な視点からの研究を応援する。大幅な書評欄を擁するこの『Early Science and Medicine』誌は、新興の歴史学的な研究の手法と分野に対する特別コーナーを近年設置し始めている。当誌のメインの言語は、英語であるがフランス語とドイツ語の寄稿も受け入れる。」
Early Science and Medicine is an international quarterly
dedicated to the history of science, medicine and technology from the earliest
times through to the end of the seventeenth century. The need to treat in a
single journal all aspects of scientific activity and thought before the
eighteenth century is due to two factors: to the continued importance of
ancient sources throughout the Middle Ages and the early modern period, and to
the comparably low degree of specialization and the high degree of disciplinary
interdependence characterizing the period before the professionalization of
science. The journal, which limits itself to the Western, Byzantine and Arabic
traditions, is particularly interested in emphasizing these elements of
continuity and interconnectedness, and it encourages their diachronic study
from a variety of viewpoints, including commented text editions and monographic
studies of historical figures and scientific questions or practices. Early
Science and Medicine, which contains an extended book review section, has
recently also begun to dedicate special feature sections to emerging
historiographic fields and methods of research. The main language of the
journal is English, though contributions in French and German are also
accepted.
